Microfilm reproductions of serials

Hello,

I have been working on a project to catalogue a set of microfilms we have that reproduce different types of material. When I started to catalogue the serials portion, I realized that I was confused and have not been able to find a good answer to my problem. We catalogue everything according to RDA rules now. I have attempted to catalogue the microfilms as microfilms but have been unsure of what to do with the values in the fixed field. Specifically, if the material reproduced was a periodical or serial, should the basic form of the fixed field be "continuing resources" to reflect the nature of the original material, or should it be "books" to reflect the nature of the unique microfilm that is unchanging but happens to reproduce a serial? How should I approach such a problem?

This was one among other problems with RDA's approach to microfilms that led to the PCC Task Group that led to the draft LC-PCC PS 1.11 (applicable to US libraries only) available here:

If the microfilms of serials are cataloged following RDA directly (which is still an option if your library would prefer not to follow policy statement 1.11), I would contend that they should be coded as "books" -- since, based on your description, it sounds like the microfilm reels themselves do not constitute actual serial issues (genuine microfilm serials do exist, but I have encountered them rarely)
