transliteration of Greek characters

CUNY and, I suspect, most, if not all, American libraries use the ALA-LC Romanization Tables for all languages that use a non-Roman alphabet. This is available on Catalogers Desktop and also on the Web <http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html> I believe the situation in Europe is more complicated, with many libraries having their own standards.

I you use the ALA-LC Romanization Table for Greek, you should be aware that some letters are transliterated differently, depending on whether the text is ancient or modern Greek. Also, some combinations of letters have their own transliteration. The table does make this clear.
