Dear Autocat
Would you please give me your opinion .Is it correct to use field 100 and subfied e for author and editor when the editor and author is the same person?

When  there is a book in a foreign language and there is no authority for a series or author Library of Congress  but there is  one in VIAF. Is it okay to use the one find in VIAF ?

Thank you for your help
Kind regards
Resoum

Dear Autocat

I  read this piece of information how to createa  cutter number  for Arabic number when it is  main entry:

n     Use Cutters .A12 - .A19 when cuttering
Roman or Arabic numerals  when title main
entry)
n  Choose a Cutter near the center of
this range when it is the first Cutter for a numeral in the class

Example: Call no. for thistitle "101 careers in mathematics" is QA10.5.A15  1991

The above example help me to some extent. I would be very grateful if you could provide me with any information which will help me for creating a cutter number for Arabic number.

Thank you for your help
Kind regardsResoum

Resoum asked about Cuttering numbers.

This is normally only needed for title main entries starting with numbers.

LC says:

When Cuttering for Roman or Arabic numerals, use the Cutters .A12 -
.A19. However, if entries already in the shelflist have been assigned
"documents numbers" (e.g., .A5 for the corporate heading United
States. Dept. of ...) Cutter numerals to file directly behind those
entries. Because of the infinite range of numbers, choose a Cutter
toward the center of the available span when Cuttering for the first
numeral in a class. This will allow room for both smaller and larger
numbers. Follow this practice even with relatively low numbers since
decimal fractions are filed in numeric order before the number 1.
(See G 63, Section 3, Subject Cataloging Manual: Shelflisting.)

The SLC cheat sheet may be found at:

http://special-cataloguing.com/cheats/cuttering

It says:

SLC continues the earlier practice of Cuttering numbers as if spelled
in the language of the text, e.g., "50" in an English text would be
Cuttered "F53". LC practice when Cuttering for Roman or Arabic
numerals, is to use the Cutters .A12 - .A19. However, if entries
already in the shelflist have been assigned form numbers (e.g., .A5
for the corporate heading United States. Dept. of ...)LC Cutter
numerals to file directly after those entries. Because of the infinite
range of numbers, LC chooses a Cutter toward the center of the
available span when Cuttering for the first numeral in a class. This
will allow room for both smaller and larger numbers. Follow this
practice even with relatively low numbers since decimal fractions are
filed in numeric order before the number 1. (See G 63, Section 3,
Subject Cataloging Manual: Shelflisting.)

Some prefer to follow "A1" with the number being Cuttered, avoiding
A11. This matches computer non decimal filing, of titles being
Cuttered, e.g., "50" would be Cuttered "A15"*, unless that number has
been assigned a meaning in the schedule, or has been used, in which
case the first available number would be used., pushing "Aaron"
further down. (This taking up numbers needed for main entry Cuttering,
as well as being consistent with earlier practice, is why SLC
continues Cuttering as if spelled out.)

*It is best to not end normal Cutters with 0, 1, or 2; 1 is used to
introduce a number for the language of a transltion, e.g., 13 English;
2 is used after the Cutter for a resource to place a croiticism next
to it.
