Discussion:
MeSH qualifiers versus publication types

Hello,

For MeSH headings, are form/genre subdivisions strictly limited to the
"allowable qualifiers" listed on under a given heading?

In OCLC # 852239558, the following was assigned: >650 #2 Primary Health
Care $v Handbooks.

However, the MeSH browser page for Primary Health Care doesn't list
Handbooks as an allowable qualifier. Rather, the browser page for Handbooks
says it is a Publication Type, which I thought was only used in 655 fields.

Is this simply nonstandard usage or do I misunderstand MeSH?

Thanks,

When NLM MARC records are distributed to OCLC, the headings are converted
to the traditional subject string that you find with LCSH. "Primary Health
Care $v Handbooks" is correct in OCLC.

If you retrieved the MARC from NLM's LocatorPlus catalog, for example, you
would find this split between a 650 and a 655:

650 12 Primary Health Care
655 _2 Handbooks

For more information, see Module 8 of NLM's MeSH course:
